The Domination of Asher Pindar and Dr. Jonathan in Winston Churchill’s PlayDr. Jonathan

Dr. Jonathan is a play which describes how Asher Pindar as the employer dominates his employees. Asher Pindar dominates his employees through two ways, culture and violence. It also portrays how Dr. Jonathan dominates the other characters through his intellectuality. Relating to the statement above,this study is intended to answer three formulated research problems. Namely, (1) how does Asher Pindar dominate the other characters in Dr. Jonathan, a play by Winston Churchill?,(3) what are the sufferings that are experienced by the employees due to the effect of Asher’s domination in capitalism era?, (4) what are the employees’ efforts against Asher’s domination that are applied in Dr. Jonathan, a play by Winston Churchill?.Therefore, this study is focused on the dialogues and author’s narration that depict the phenomena of hegemonyin Dr. Jonathan play by Winston Churchill. Thisstudyuses hegemony theory that is formulated by Antonio Gramsci, capitalism and class struggle, and democracy theory.

Futhermore, to conduct this study, the qualitative research is used to analyze the data. After analyzing the play, it can be concluded that there are three kinds of hegemony that are reflected in the play entitled Dr. Jonathan. Asher’s domination uses cultural and violence hegemony, while Dr. Jonathan’s domination uses intellectual hegemony. Then, there are the effects that appear due to hegemony, named economic affair, lose the job, and death, and also there are some efforts that appear to resist hegemony named joining union and labor strikes that are reflected in the play entitled Dr. Jonathan.
