An Analysis of the Main Characters in The Scattering Novel Using Archetypal Theory

This study focuses on the archet ypal characters in the novel “The
Scattering” by Kimberly McCreight. The Scattering tells about the outlier who
can read the emotions and intents of other, no matter how hard they try to hide
their feelings. The aim of this study is to explain the archetypes which are
portrayed by the characters in The Scattering by Kimberly McCreight based on
Carl Gustav Jung theory.
This study uses Archetypal theory based on Carl Gustav Jung which
focuses on archetype characters such as: Persona, Shadow, Anima, Animus, Great
Mother, Wise Old Mine and Hero. The data analysis of this research uses
qualitative method. Method of data collection is done by collecting, displaying,
and making conclusion or verification of the data.
There are two result of this study. The first, the writer show several
character that appear in The Scattering novel by Kimberly McCreight using
particular archetype such as: Anima, The Guide, and the Hero. They are Gideon
as the anima. Rachel, Jasper and Dr. Haddox as the guide and the last are Wylie as
the hero in this novel. The second, the writer find the moral values of this study
that reflects among characters and event in The Scattering novel.
