An Analysis of Second Language Acquisition of The Main Character in English Vinglish Movie

This research focuses on the stages and the syntactical aspects of second language acquisition used by the main character in English Vinglish movie. The aims of this research are to describe the stages of second language acquisition and the syntactical aspect that occur in each the stage. This research is using Haynes and Zacarian (2010) theory to analyze the stages and using Miller (2002) theory to analyze syntactical aspects that occur in each stage of second language acquisition.
This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The source of data of this study is English Vinglish movie. The data of this study are the utterances that include word, phrase, and clause which are containing stages and syntactical aspects in each stage of second language acquisition expressed by the main character ‘Shashi’ in the movie.
The finding of this research demonstrate the stages of second language acquisition and the syntactical aspect that occur in each the stage mirrored by the main character in English Vinglish movie. The writer concludes that the stages of second language acquisition are starting or preproduction stage (2 data), emerging or early production stage (5 data), developing stage (3 data), expanding stage (1 datum), and bridging stage (2 data). The process of language acquisition indicates that syntactical aspects are occurring in each the stage of second language acquisition. The syntactical aspect that occur in the first stage or starting stage of second language acquisition that mirrored by Sashi is ‘Noun (N)’ in the form of word. The syntactical aspect that happen in the emerging stage is noun phrase (NP), prepositional phrase (PP), and verb phrase (VP) which all of them in the form of short phrases. The syntactical aspect in the third stage or developing stage is subject (noun) and predicate (verb) which they occur in the form of short sentence. The syntactical aspect that occur in Expanding stage is adjective (A) changes to noun phrase (NP). The last syntactical aspect that occurs in the last stage or bridging is sentence (S), which is in the form of complete sentence and complex sentence.
