MA’S SELF-ACTUALIZATION IN EMMA DONOGHUE’S ROOM: MASLOW HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH

This study focuses on the Ma’s need to achieve her self-actualization based on Abraham Maslow theory. This study aims to explain Ma’s needs from the basic need until the self-actualization need and describe the characteristics of self-actualization people. This study uses a novel from Emma Donoghue entitled Room as the source of data.
This study used a qualitative research design as the method because the data are in the form of words. The data is the narration and utterances of the novel which correlated with the theory of Abraham Maslow. The data of this study are taken through reading, reducing, and analyzing the data. This study applies Maslow’s human motivation as the theory.
The results of this study indicate that Ma has fulfilled her needs from the D-needs (Deficiency needs) which are physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, and esteem need, until the B-need (Being need) which is the self-actualization need. She also has characteristics of the self-actualizer which are more efficient perception of reality; acceptance of self, others, and nature; spontaneity, simplicity, naturalness; problem centering; the need for privacy; autonomy; continued freshness of appreciation; peak experiences; social interest; profound interpersonal relations; democratic character structure; discrimination: means and ends; philosophical sense of humor; creativeness; and resistance to enculturation.
