Abstract
An Analysis of Syntactical Errors of English Utterances Produced by Students of English Department at Universitas Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Dr. Diah Ikawati Ayuningtias, S.S., M.Pd.rnrnThis study aimed to identify the syntactical errors and to describe the factor of errors that appeared in English utterances produced by senior student of English Department in UTM. The researcher applied a descriptive qualitative approach with Error Analysis Theory proposed by Gass et al (2013) and Phrase Structure Rule (PRS) proposed by Carnie (2013). The data collection techniques were conducted through elicitation task and audio-visual material from Creswell (2014) that involved recording the utterances. The data were obtained in the form transcribed utterances of spoken English. Data were analysed using analysis model from Creswell (2014). The result showed there are three types of error that were found; Omission (18%), Addition (6%), and Mis-formation error (76%). Most of the errors were caused by intralingual, followed by, Ignorance Carelessness and Interlingual factor. These finding indicated that error made by the participants were still made errors caused by the second language itself.
