Abstract

This study explores the use of illocutionary acts in contemporary digital motivational speech. Specifically, the objectives of this research are to identify the types of illocutionary acts and to examine their specific functions produced by the speaker in a selected YouTube podcast episode titled “Heartbreak and failure is your superpower” by Thewizardliz.rnThis research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing Searle’s (1976) classification of illocutionary acts the primary theoretical framework. Data were collected from the transcript of the podcast and analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles et al. (2014), which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing.rnThe findings reveal that out of 253 identified utterances, four types of illocutionary acts are present: assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. Assertive acts are the most frequent (138 occurrences), followed by directive (57), commissive (29), and expressive (29), while no declaration acts were found due to the informal podcast setting where the speaker lacks institutional authority. Pragmatically, assertive acts function to establish the speaker’s epistemic authority by reconstructing life experiences meaningful truths, directive acts serve to transform motivational ideas into actionable guidance, commissive acts enhance the speaker’s reliability through personal commitments, and expressive acts contribute to building rapport and emotional closeness with the audience. Collectively, these acts demonstrate how pragmatic mechanisms operate to create persuasive and empowering motivational messages in digital media.
