This study analyzes the love relation of characters and the effects of their love by using triangular of love theory. The love is chosen to be analyzed based on component and kind of love. Danielle Steel’s The Ranch is chosen as source of data in this study. Dealing with this study, the writer presents two problems: What are kinds of love seen in love relation between characters in this novel? What are the effects of their love to their love relations in this novel? This study is intended to analyze kinds of love that are shown by characters in their love relation and the effects of characters’ love to their love relation in this novel. Further, this study focuses on love relation between Mary Stuart and Bill Walker, Tanya Thomas and Tony Goldman, Zoe Philip and Sam Warner.
In addition, this study uses narrative research design which is one of qualitative researches. It is used because the data were interpreted, the data and analysis are shown by the form of word, and the key instrument is the researcher. Then, the data are carefully selected by identifying the types of documents, Examining document for accuracy, completeness, and usefulness in answering the research questions and Recording information from the documents. Moreover, the technique of analyzing data of this study uses some steps; preparing and organizing the data, exploring and coding the data, interpreting findings, and the validating the accuracy of the findings.
After analyzing the data, the writer found out the result. The study finds four of eight kinds of love that involve in love relation between Mary Stuart and Bill Walker, Tanya Thomas and Tony Goldman and Zoe Philip and Sam Warner. Those are empty, romantic, fatuous and consummate love. From the kinds of love Mary Stuart’s, Tanya Thomas’ and Sam Warner’s love shows consummate love, Bill Walker’s love shows empty love, Zoe Philip’s love shows romantic love and Tony Goldman’s love shows fatuous love. Further, this study also finds some effect from their love relation. The love relation of Mary’s and Bill’s love bring on bad relationship and infidelity, Tanya’s and Tony’s love bring on bad relationship and infidelity, and Zoe’s and Sam’s love do not bring any effect.
