THE FAULT IN OUR STARS: TRANSFORMATION ON INTRINSIC ELEMENTS FROM NOVEL TO FILM

The Fault in Our Star is one of novels which is written by John Green. This novel is transformed into film by Josh Boon. There are two caracters who suffer cancer. Namely, Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace. Hazel suffers tyroid cancer since she was thirteen. This cancer makes her difficult to take breath. Therefore, she must use respiratory auxiliary hose and oxygen canisters. While Augustus suffers osteosarcoma cancer which makes him lose his one of the leg.
This study is conducted by using qualitative method to differ the intrinsic elements, namely ccompiling or collecting the data, reducing the data, reasembling data, interpreting the data, and concluding the analysis. Consquently, the writer is the key instrument and the analysis is performed in the form of words interpretation to answer the formulated research problems.
After analyzing the data, it can be concluded that there some differentiation between the intrinsic element in the novel and the film. In the film Augustus and Hazel are the only one child in the family. Whereas in the novel, Augustus had older brother. In the novel, Hazel has closed friend, while in the film, she does not has closed friend. The different is also found in the setting of place in where there is a child who borrows Hazel’s breathing apparatus. In the film, it happens in airport. While in the novel, it takes place in a mall.
