Abstract
The aims of the study are to investigate the types and the functions of ellipsis in Enrique Iglesias’s song lyrics. This study uses two theories to analyze the data. Those are Halliday & Hasan (1976) and Quirk & Greenbaum (1973).
This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study are the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences found in Enrique Iglesias’s song lyrics. The main instrument of the study was the writer herself which are functioning to collect, read, classify, and analyze the data. This study used content analysis method to collect the data. The writer also used interactive data analysis to analyze the data.
In the findings, the writer finds 37 data that can be categorized based on the types and functions of ellipsis in Enrique Iglesias’s song lyrics. The writer finds three types of ellipsis, nominal (7 data), verbal (12 data), and clausal ellipsis (17 data). This study also shows two functions of ellipsis which are omission (27 data) and repetition (10 data).
