A STUDY OF LEXICAL COHESION DEVICES IN THE HOBBIT PART 2: THE SOLATION OF SMAUG MOVIE

This study focus on the type and the most dominant use of lexical cohesion devices in The Hobbit Part 2: The Desolation of Smaug movie. This study uses Brian Paltridge (2006) and Halliday and Hasan (1976) theories. This research was conducted by using descriptive design. The writer chooses the movie The Hobbit Part 2: Desolation of Smaug as the source of data and the data is the conversation of the movie related to lexical cohesion. The data was analyzed and classified based on the types of lexical cohesion proposed by Brian Paltridge (2006). This study used content-analysis method as the method of data collection. This study used interactive data analysis model as the method of analyzing data. In this study, the writer found fives type of lexical cohesion those are; repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy and meronymy. The writer found 32 data, from 32 data collected, 15 data belong to repetition, 3 data belong to synonymy, 11 data belong to antonymy, 2 data belong to hyponymy and 1 data belong to meronymy. Furthermore, the most dominant of lexical is repetition which calculated from the data that appear in the conversation of the movie.
