A Study of Taboo Words in Neighbors Film

ABSTRACT

This study concerns the use of taboo words produced by the characters of Neighbors film. The aims of the study are to explain kinds of taboo word produced by characters in Neighbors Film and to explain the reason why the characters produced taboo words.
This study uses descriptive qualitative method to collect the data, classify the data, and draw the conclusion based on the data analysis. It uses sociolinguistic approach. The source of this study is Neighbors film and the data are taken from the characters of Neighbors film that contains taboo words. Those are taboo word derived from bodily organs, taboo word derived from bodily effluvia, taboo word derived from sexual behavior, dysphemistic taboo word and Imprecations and taboo word invoking mental sub normality or derangement. There are 116 data used in this study.
This study found 9 data belong to taboo word derived from bodily organs,

33 data belong to taboo word derived from bodily effluvia, 65 data belong to taboo word derived from sexual behavior, 2 data belong to dysphemistic taboo word, and 7 data belong to Imprecations and taboo word invoking mental sub normality or derangement. Moreover, this study also finds that there are several reasons why the character of the movie produced taboo word. There are 10 data belong to create attention, 23 data belong to discredit, 7 data belong to identification, 14 data belong to provoke, 43 data belong to provide catharsis, and
19 data belong to insult.
