NARRATIVE STRUCTURE AND MAGIC IN KELLY BARNHILL'S THE GIRL WHO DRUNK THE MOON (A TZVETAN TODOROV NARRATOLOGI PERSPECTIVE)

ABSTRACT

The purposes of this study were to describe the narration of the story line used in the novel The Girl Who Drunk The Moon according to Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative perspective and to find out and analyze the aspects of magic depicted in the story. Related to the purpose, this research is focused on the analysis of the stages of the flow beginning to end and how the depiction of the magic aspects excise in the story according to the narrative plot of the novel.
This was a qualitative study because first, the data that were analyzed and interpreted were not manipulated. Second, the data analyzed are from the utterances of the characters and the direct explanation from the author. Reducing data, displaying data and making conclusion are the technique of analyzing data.
This study found the followings: (1) The plot of the story in the novel The Girl Who Drunk The Moon uses the narrative structure Tzvetan Todorov model.
There are three story timelines, namely the plot of story in beginning, middle and end. All stories start with a balance of which some of the potential for conflict is tries to be balanced at a time. (2) From the narration of the plot, it is found the depiction of the magic aspects occur in the novel.
