Abstract

ABSTRACT
Amelia, Riana.09.05.111.00066. A Study of Madurese Third Person Singular Pronouns. Thesis. English Study Program, Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: (1) Iqbal Nurul Azhar, S.S, M. Hum, (2) Diah Ikawati Ayuningtias, S.S., M.Pd

The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe that Madurese language has its third person singular pronouns, and (2) to describe how Madurese people use the third person singular pronouns. This design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The sources of data of this research are divided into two. The first type of sources is four books and one magazine written in Madurese language. The titles of the books are (1) Siman ban Simin by Sastrodiwirjo, (2) Seri Bahasa Madura Lancar Maca written by Patmodiwirjo, (3) Ma’on so Mu’in written by Patmodiwirjo, and (4) Buletin Konkonan Pamerte Basa Madura, (5) Jokotole magazine.
The data of this research are the sentences which are found in the books, magazine, and also written in the informant questionnaires which contained Madurese third person singular pronouns. The second type of sources were ten Madurese informants who had been interviewed during the research. They were all Madurese and lived in Sumenep, and they could speak and write Madurese language fluently. The writer chooses: (1) content analysis as the method to collect the data from books, and (2) interview to collect the data from the informants.
From the written data, the writer found out that Madurese people use six strategies to cope with the lack of the third person singular pronoun. The strategies are as follows; (1) using salèrana, (2) using aruwa, (3) using ghânèko, (4) using jârèya, (5) using abâ’na, and (6) repeating the subjects. From the interview, most informants prefer salèrana (since salèrana is considered more polite) to other types of third person singular pronoun.

Keywords: Third person singular pronoun, Madurese language.
