Rescue Symbolizes Heroism in Ransom Riggs’s Hollow City and Library of Souls: Monomyth

This study is aimed to discuss the hero journey stages of Jacob Portman, and his psychological development as the result of the journey. This study uses two novels, those are Riggs’s Hollow City and Library of Souls, and monomyth theory of Joseph Campbell is used to obtain the analysis.
This study uses qualitative design. In which, the data are collected from the characters and narration utterances. Method of data collection uses understanding, identifying, and selecting data. Further, the data selected was displayed and categorized based on Campbell’s monomyth theory. Analyzing data was done by reducing data, displaying data, and making conclusion.
The results of this study finds Jacob’s journey greatly matches with monomyth circle. In Jacob’s journey, there are three main stages of hero journey.Those are Departure, Initiations, and Return. All sub stages of them also portrayed in Jacob’s journey. In addition, this study finds there are psychological developments of Jacob, as the result of Jacob’s heroic adventure. His psychological developments are portrayed by the comparation of psychological state between old and new Jacob.
