ALINA STARKOVS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IN LEIGH BARDUGOS NOVEL SHADOW AND BONE

This study analyzes the development of Alina Starkovs character in the novel Shadow and Bone using the New Criticism approach. In this novel, Alina Starkovs development is described through changes in her attitude, beliefs, and abilities a Sun Summoner. The qualitative descriptive research method is used in this study. With this method, the author uses data in the form of descriptions speech in Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. The method of data collection in this study is reading novels and references, then analyzed with several steps such data division, data management, and data interpretation with the theory used. The results of the study show that Alinas transformation is not only driven by external events, but also by inner conflict and her understanding of identity and power. The transformations are, cowardness transform into braveness, overthinking transform into clarity, insecurity transform into confidence, feebleness transform into strength.
