A Study of Women's Speech Features of Female Characters in Grown Ups 2 movie

The purpose of this study is to determine the types of women’s speech featuresand find out the most dominant type of women’s speech features used in Grown Ups 2 movie. It also explainsthe functions of women’s speech features. This study is also expected to give more knowledge about sociolinguistics, especially on women’s speech features proposed by Lakoff.

This writer uses qualitative research design since the data are in the form of words. The data of this study were taken from any utterances produced by female character which contains women’s speech featuresin Grown Ups 2 movie. The data are collected by using content analysis method. In analyzing the data, the writer uses interactive data analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman.

The results showed nine types of women’s speech features found in the findings related to the research questions, they are: lexical hedges fillers, tag question, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjective, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, super polite form, avoidance of strong swear word and emphatic stress. Lexical hedges fillers and intensifier became the most dominant types of women’s speech feature used by female characters with 6 data found each type. The researcher also found the function of women’s speech features. Those are, as hedging device because women feels uncertainty about their statement, as boosting deviceto strengthen their statement and there were some features which do not have specific function.
