This study, entitled Zoe’s Personality in Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult, intends to analyze the personality of major character in Sing You Home novel, Zoe, by using Sigmund Freud’s theory of personality which is a part of psychoanalytic theory. Zoe is chosen to be analyzed based on the personality point of view because she is the main character who is described as a heterosexual woman who turns into a lesbian or interests in the same sex. It focuses on the structure of personality and the dynamic personality. The structure of personality discusses the three parts of personality; id, ego, and superego, while the dynamic personality discusses about instinct.
Moreover, this study is conducted by using a qualitative design. The writer is the key instrument. The data of this study are the utterances of the characters and the narrations of the author in Jodi Picoult’s Sing You Home.
The results of this study are: in structure of personality, id has dominant role more than ego and superego. Meanwhile, the dynamic personality, the source of Zoe’s instinct is Vanessa. The aim of Zoe’s instinct is to change her sexual orientation. The objects of Zoe’s instinct here are the denial of Zoe’s feeling and telling the truth about her sexual deviation to her mother and her ex-husband. Then, Zoe’s life instinct is Zoe’s libido that pushes her to imagine the things that refer to Vanessa’s body.
