Abstract
This study focuses on codes in A Man Called Ove By Fredrick Backman through five narrative code theory by Roland Barthes. This study aims to find out the data that consists of the five narrative codes: Hermeneutic code, Proarietic code, semantic code, Cultural Code, and Symbolic code by Roland Barthes. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The writer does several steps to collect the data, namely reading the novel, identifying relevant data, making notes, and classified the data based on the five narrative five codes. Then, the writer does three steps in analyzing the data, namely data condensation, data display, and drawing verifying conclusions. The data used in this study are the utterances of character and the authors narration in the novel A Man Called Ove (2012). The theory of this study in analyzing kinds of Codes is Semiotics theory by Roland Barthes (1990) This study presents findings on the five narrative codes: hermeneutic code, proariotic code, semantic code, cultural code, and symbolic code proposed by Barthes. The writer found 54 data items: 12 categorized hermeneutic code, 6 proairetic code, 13 semantic code, 12 cultural code, and 9 symbolic code. The result of the study is the explanation below. The hermeneutic code data can be formulated and discovered the main meanings such principles, identity, personal identity, conditions, and others. Proarietic discussion, the data are analyzed into a series of actions presented in a proarietic formulation. In the semantic code, all data described the character characteristics of a character and the data is analyzed briefly and concisely. The cultural Code are found in the story and data can be found at the core of the discussion, including presumptions, norms, habits, knowledge, wisdom, and others. In symbolic discussion, the meaning of all the data can be found by using the antithesis opposition in the story. Then, those five narrative codes uncover the hidden meaning that Oves life was colorless due to the death of his wife, Sonja.
