Abstract
This study focuses on transitivity process and the components of transitivity in The Firelight Fairy Book written by Henry Beston. This study aims to explain the types of transitivity process found in Marianna and the effectiveness of transitivity’s components in Marianna. In addition, to analyze the data, this study uses Simpson’s theory, who divides types of transitivity into generalized and particularized transitivity process. This study also uses the theory of Hopper and Thompson related to the mechanisms of determining the effectiveness of transitivity’s components; transitivity hypothesis. Moreover, this study is conducted using a qualitative design because the data are in the form of words. The data of this study are the narration and utterances which is obtained in Henry Beston’s Fairy Tale “Marianna.” The data of this study are collected by using content analysis method.
The data analysis reveals the findings covering the formulated research questions. Firstly, the types of transitivity process are mostly material process. It is demonstrated by 84 data of the data categorized as material process. This process is to describe the experiential design of character in this fairy tales. The second position is mental process. It is shown by 23 data categorized as mental process which has function to create alive internalized action that can be a stimulus of material process. In the third position, there is verbal process which is found 11 data. This process is to elaborate character’s personality. The next is relational process which has 8 data from 130 data. That has a function to describe quality and attribute of occurred action. Then, there is existential process which is to emphasize certain thing, and behavioral process; giving responsive action, which have 2 data. Moreover, the effectiveness of transitivity’s components found in the data indicates that there are 114 data which are categorized as the high effectiveness of transitivity’s components.
