Abstract
The aims of this study are to explain: (1) the kinds of language deviation applied in four poems of Edgar Allan Poe, (2) the most frequently type of language deviation applied in four poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Moreover, the concept of language deviation is the infraction of the language that is used in the text such as poetry, based on the theory of Geoffrey N. Leech (1996).
This study was qualitative research. The source of data was the four poems of Edgar Allan Poe entitled, Bells, The; Israfel; A Valentine; and Annabel Lee. The data are the words, phrases and sentences that contain language deviation. The data were collected by using content analysis method and were analyzed by using qualitative interactive models.
The total data were 27 data. Among language deviation’s types existed, graphological deviation was 18 data, grammatical deviation was 8 data and there was 1 data for dialectical deviation.
