A STUDY OF IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS USED BY THE INDONESIAN FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR IN PRESIDENT CUP 2017

This study focuses on the idiomatic expressions that were found in the commentaries of football commentator in Final President Cup 2017. This study aimed to identify the types of idiomatic expressions used by the commentator in Final President Cup 2017. It also aimed to explain the functions of idiomatic expressions. The writer used the theory proposed by Seidl and McMordie (1988) to analyze the types of idiomatic expressions, and Fernando (1996) to analyze the function of idiomatic expressions.
This study used the descriptive qualitative since the data were in the form of words rather than in the form of number. The source of data was taken from the commentaries in Final President Cup 2017. The data of this study are all idiomatic expressions which were taken from the commentaries in Final President Cup 2017. The method of collecting data in this study was content analysis proposed by Holsty (1969). To analyze the data, the writer used interactive data analysis from Miles and Huberman (1994).
Based on the analysis, the writer found 26 data of idiomatic expressions which are classified into five types from the total 28 data of idiomatic expressions since the others were not found. They are idiom with noun and adjective, idiomatic pairs, phrasal verbs, idiom with verb + noun combination and idiom with keywords from special categories which stated by Seidl and McMordie (1988) since the other two types: idiom with prepositions and idiom for special subject were not found. The most frequently used was idiom with idiomatic pairs (35%) and the least frequent was phrasal verbs idioms with the percentage 4%. For the function, the writer found two out of three functions from 28 data, they are ideational function and relational function proposed by Fernando (1996) since the type interpersonal function was not included on the data. The writer found that the most frequently used of the functions idiomatic expressions is ideational functions (93%). It was more than relational functions which is respectively 7 %.
