The Characters’ Narcissistic Personality Disorder
in Lisa Kleypas’ Blue-Eyed Devil

This study uses novel by Lisa Kleypas. It is Blue-Eyed Devil which published in 2008. The main character in this novel is Haven. The supporting characters are Nick and Vanessa. The novel clearly describes those characters having narcissistic personality disorder. The aim of the study is to analyze the characteristic, symptoms, and cause of the characters having narcissistic personality disorder.
Narcissism theory, precisely the term of narcissistic personality disorder in Heinz Kohut is used as a tool to analyze this novel. The writer uses qualitative design in descriptive research to analyze. The writer is the key instrument and the data are the words in novel Blue-Eyed Devil. Consequently, the narration and the utterances of the characters having narcissistic personality disorder are used to describe the characters’ narcissistic personality disorder. Hence, the data collection was done with the data analysis.
After analyzing the novel Blue Eyed Devil, the results of the study are: (1) The characteristics of narcissistic personality disorder in characters shows grandiose sense, admiration, lack of empathy, preoccupation with beauty, and arrogant. (2) The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder showed by the characters are depression, hypersensitive, and hypochondria. (3) Sexual trauma is the cause that leads the characters experience narcissistic personality disorder.
