An Analysis of Impoliteness Strategies Used by Netizens on Joe Jonas`s Instagram Comments

This study analyses impoliteness strategies found in Joe Jonas`s Instagram comments. The purpose of this study is to explain and describe the types and functions of impoliteness strategies used by netizens on Joe Jonas`s Instagram comments. The writer uses the theory of impoliteness strategies proposed by Culpeper (1996) to analyse the types of impoliteness strategies and Culpeper (2011) to analyse the functions of impoliteness strategies. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method by Bogdan and Biklen (1998). The source of data used in this study are comments made by netizens on Joe Jonas's Instagram and take comments made on September 27th, 2023. This study was analysed by applying the theory by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). In addition, the main instrument in this study is the writer herself. The results of this study found 50 comment data that match the types and functions of impoliteness strategies. The types of impoliteness strategies found are four out of five types of impoliteness strategies, namely bald on-record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and sarcasm mock politeness. Bald on-record impoliteness there are 20 data, positive impoliteness there are 18 data, negative impoliteness there are 6 data, and sarcasm mock politeness there are 6 data. Meanwhile, the functions of impoliteness strategies found are three functions, namely affective function, coercive function, and entertaining function. Affective function there are 34 data, coercive function there are 10 data, and entertaining function there are 6 data.
