Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tentang peran keluarga didaam beberapa puisi dari Louise Gluck. Pada penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan teori New Criticism untuk mengungkapkan peran keluarga yang terdapat dalam puisi melalui formal elemen.
Penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriftif. Teknik pengumpulan datanya adalah membaca dan membahami puisi yang termasuk dalam formal elemen seperti; imagery, symbols, metaphor dan simile. Analisis data dilakukan dengan pengumpulan, pengurangan, interpretasi dan membuat kesimpulan.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat beberapa lirik puisi yang menunjukkan tentang peran keluarga seperti; peran ayah kepada ayahnya, peran ibu sebagai seseorang yang kuat, dan peran anggota keluarga lainnya yang sangat berpengaruh didalam keluarga.
