Gothic Language Style in Demian Novel by Hermann Hesse: Stylistic Approach

The purposes of this study are to find what kind of stylistic devices, and explain how it helps to raise the gothic atmosphere in Demian novel written by Hermann Hesse. The writer uses stylistic as the approach to analyze the gothic language style in the novel.
The type of this study is qualitative research because the writer has to interpret the data which needs in-depth analysis to answer the research problems. The data are the characters’ utterances and the author’s narration which are collected through the close reading technique. The technique of analyzing the data is done by categorizing the data into the types of stylistic devices, interpreting, and concluding.
The findings of this study revealed that the types of stylistic devices which is used in this novel to raise the gothic atmosphere are diction, symbolism, point of view, and figurative language. The author also tends to use certain diction to maintain the gothic atmosphere, use outdated architecture and religious places, symbolism as an omen, and the first-person point of view to engage with the reader. This study also found some inexplicable events and nightmares written as imagery, and the charactonym references are from ancient names and the Bible.
