An Analysis of Refusal Strategies Used by Madurese and Javanese Students of English Study Program of Trunojoyo University, Madura

Abstract: This study aims to identify the most frequently used of refusal strategies used by Madurese students and Javanese students, and also indentify the differences and the similarities of the refusal strategies used by Madurese and Javanese students of English Study Program. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study are the words, phrases, clauses, and sentances in refusal strategy chosen by Madurese and Javanese students of English Study Pprogram. The main instrument was the researcher and questionnairs which functionning to collect, read, classify and analyze the data. The data were gathered from the University of Trunojoyo Madura. the researcher used refusal strategies proposed by Beebe (1990). The researcher found that most of Madurese and Javanese Students preferred to used indirect strategy that is Expression of excuse, reason or explanation. It concluded that both of the ethnics groups try to relieve conflict happen. The researcher also found that the Madurese used direct refusal strategies excessively than Javanes students.
