A GENRE STUDY IN NEFF’S 50 BEST HOME COOKS BOOK

This study focuses on genre of the clauses in Neff’s 50 Best Home Cooks. This study aims to explain the generic structure and the form linguistic feature of Neff’s 50 Best Home Cooks. In addition to analyze the data, this study uses theory of genre, namely schematic structure (Martin) and Systemic Functional Linguistics; lexicogrammar (Halliday, 1985; 1994; 2004 and Halliday and Hasan, 1985) and finite (Harman and Symonik, 1950; 1958 and Curme, 1931). This study is conducted by applying a descriptive research design since the data are in the from of words. The source of data is take from 10 subrecipes Neff’s 50 Best Home Cooks. The data of this study are the clause in Neff’s 50 Best Home Cooks that include in genre; generic structure and linguistic features. The data are collected by using Miles and huberman theory. The data analysis reveals the finding covering the formulated research question. Firstly, the writer found the generic structure, namely 10 introduction, 10 content or middle, and 7 closing. Secondly, the writer found the form of linguistic features of Neff’s 50 Best Home Cooks. They are 212 process, 97 conjunction, and 210 finite. The dominant types of process is material process namely 210 frequency. Besides the dominant of coordinate conjunction and subordinate conjunction is the word “and” and “until”.
