Abstract

ABSTRACT

Setyowati, D. 130511100092. A Study of Adjunct in Wendy Wasserstein’s The Man in a Case. Thesis. English Study Program, Faculty of Social and Cultural Science, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Misnadin, S.S., M.A., Ph.D

This study focuses on the adjunct as Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) found in the short play entitled The Man in a Case. This study aims to explain types of adjunct which are found in the short play The Man in a Case. It also aims to explain functions of adjunct found in The Man in a Case.
This study used the theories proposed by Halliday (2004) and Eggins and Slade (1997) to analyze the types and functions of adjunct. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The source of data was the short play The Man in a Case written by Wendy Wasserstein. The data of this study were the words and the phrases found in the short play The Man in a Case which contain adjunct. The data were collected by using content analysis method. After collecting the data, the data were analyzed by using interactive data analysis method.
The writer found 40 data in this study. They belong to three types of adjunct, those are 13 data for circumstantial adjunct, 17 data for interpersonal adjunct, and 10 data for textual adjunct. According to Eggins and Slade (1997), there are three functions of adjuncts, namely, (1) to negotiate beyond subject-finite, (2) to express a position or assessment, and (3) to construct coherence and continuity in talk. The writer only found two functions in this study. Specifically, there were 17 data belonging to the second function and 10 data belong to the third function of adjunct. Besides, the writer categorizes 13 data as the new functions, namely to indicate a place and to indicate time action.
