Abstract
This study aimed to examine the types and the functions of cataphora in
Easy A movie. The source of data of this study is Easy A movie with characters’
utterances contain cataphora as the data.
This study used descriptive qualitative research design and the writer herself
as the research instrument. The writer used content analysis as a method in
collecting data and interactive data analysis as the method of data analysis.
There were 22 data of cataphora found in this study. Those 22 data were
classified into two types of cataphora, namely, intrasentential cataphora and
intersentential cataphora. From those 22 data, 8 data belong to intrasentential
cataphora and 14 data belong to intersentential cataphora. Those 22 data were also
classified into two functions of cataphora, that is, (1) to emphasize what follows
(15 data ) and (2) to keep the listener’s attention alive during the talks (7 data).
