A Study of Antonomasia in News Articles of Time Magazine

This study focuses on antonomasia as a figure of speech found in the
news articles of Time Magazine 2016 edition, vol 187, february to April. This
study aims to explain the types of antonomasia which are found in Time
Magazine. It also aims to explain the functions of antonomasia in Time Magazine.
In addition, to analyze the data, this study uses theories proposed by
Lehtsalu et al
The writer found 35 data. The writer found 8 data which belong to
metaphorical antonomasia, 3 data which belong to metonymic antonomasia, 24
data which belong to epithet, and 0 data which belong to meaningful names. From
all those data, 14 data have a function to characterize person through his or her
name, 2 data have a function to create a humorous atmosphere, 16 data have a
function to designate a class member of people. Besides, the writer categorizes 3
data as a new function, to indicate the name of place.
