An Analysis of Social Communication Disorder of The Schizophrenic Character in A Beatiful Mind Movie.

Schizophrenia is one of mental illness influenced by the abnormal feeling in a brain and disturbed person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions and relate to others with their hallucinations and delusions. Schizophrenic persons have disturbance in a process of their thought that influence their use of language, whether producing or understanding the language.This study aims to find the elements of Social Communication Disorder (SCD) proposed by Lauren Franke (2013) and the symptoms of schizophrenia.
This study was conducted by applying a qualitative research design since the data in the form of words. The data of this study are the utterances of the main character in A Beautiful Mind movie. The data were analyzed by classifying and analyzing them based Laurance Franke’s (2013) theory.
The data analysis reveals the findings which cover the formulated research questions. Firstly, the elements of social communication disorder were mostly uttered by the main character of the movie A Beautiful Mind is SCD for the element of theory of mind in perspective taking, it was demonstrated by 6 data. Second position goes to SCD for the element of discourse management with the frequency is 4 data. Third position is nonverbal aspects shown by 3 data. Fourth is communication functions by 2 data and the last position is general rules of conduct for the speaker’s role in relationship to the communication partner shown by only 1 data. The symptoms of schizophrenia found in the movie are delusion and hallucination.
