Abstract
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a novel which is published in the Victorian era and becomes the most famous and inspiring novel. The authors who get the influence from Carroll are Dahl and Ende, they are modern era authors. They present Carroll’s ideas in their work but in different form. Relating to this, this study is intended to answer this formulated research problem. Namely, (1) what are the similarities and the differences among those novels? (2) what are the elements in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that influence James and The Giant Peach and The Neverending Story?. Therefore, this study is focused on the characters’ utterances and author narration that show the similarities and the
differences in order to figure out the influence.
The analysis is done by using comparative literature approach to bring out the similarities and the differences.
Then it applies intertextuality theory to figure out the hypogram or the elements from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that influence Dahl and Ende. Furthermore, to conduct this study, the qualitative research is used to analyze the data. After analyzing the novels, the writer found that there are similarities and the differences among those novels. The similarities are the existence of the gate, the world of imagination, the magical creatures, the magical
potion, and the great adventures. The differences are the form of the gate, the way authors present the imagination world and the creatures, also the essence of the
adventure. Then it can be concluded that Carroll’s ideas in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is the hypogram and inspiring Dahl in producing James and the
Giant Peach also Ende in producing The Neverending Story.
