The Portrait of Michigan's Great Depression Era in 19th Century in C.Paul curtis's Bud, Not Buddy

During the Great Depression era, the economy in United States was getting collapse. This condition was giving many effects among the Michigan’s society suffering and the existence of Jazz age. This study aimed to give further understanding about the phenomena and the effects of the Great Depression era in Michigan during 19th century that portrayed in the novel Bud, Not Buddy. Since this novel represents the social condition that happened in 19th century so this novel is analyzed through sociology of literature approach.
The nature of this study is qualitative research. The data are the characters’ utterances and the author’s narrations in the novel Bud, Not Buddy. The techniques of collecting data are divided into some processes, the novel is read, reread, classified on the basis problem, and the last is reduced. The techniques of analyzing data are data reduction, data display, and verification.
The results of the study are as follows; (1) the writer describes the phenomena of the dramatic event during 19th century known as the Great Depression era. The dramatic event that is caused by the economic collapse happens in Michigan, United States. (2) It gives many effects for the Michigan’s society, especially African American or Negro. The effects can be categorized into the African American suffering and the beginning of Harlem Renaissance or Jazz age.
