ABSTRACT
Jamhari, Elma Fantasia. 09.05.111.00068. The Hero’s Journey In Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief By Rick Riordan. Thesis. English Study Program of Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Diva Wenanda, S.S., M.Pd.
This study aims to explain myths in the stages of hero’s journey that are found in Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief novel written by Rick Riordan. This study is conducted by applying a qualitative research design since the data are in the form of words. The data of this study are the characters’ utterances and the author’s narration that show myths and the stages of hero’s journey in Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief novel written by Rick Riordan. This study uses the hero’s journey theory which is proposed by Christopher Vogler (1992) to analyze the data.
Based on the results of the analysis by using the theory, it can be concluded that there are several myths that found in the novel those are myths of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Dionysus, Chiron (centaur), Satyr, Athena, Ares, Medusa, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Cerberus, and the entrance of Tartarus. Moreover, Percy Jackson is the hero of the novel that pass the twelve stages of the hero’s journey those are the ordinary world, the call to adventure, refusal of the call (the reluctant hero), meeting the mentor (the wise old man or woman), crossing to the first threshold, tests, allies, enemies, approach to the inmost cave, the ordeal, reward, the road back, the resurrection, and return with the elixir. Those twelve stages help Percy to find his hero’s path and build his hero’s personality. It also makes Percy’s life becomes more useful for other people and the world.
