A STUDY OF PRESUPPOSITION IN THE BBC ENGLISH CONVERSATIONS

The goal of this study is to identify the types of presupposition and the contribution of each presupposition used in the BBC English conversation. The main theory used was Yule (2006) theory to analyze the types of presupposition and the contribution of presupposition used in the BBC English conversation.
This study used the qualitative descriptive research since the data were in the form of words rather than in the form of number. The source of data is from BBC English Conversations and the transcipt. The writer was the main instrument in this study. The data of this study are all the utterances which contained presupposition occur in the BBC English Conversation.
After analyzing the conversation. It can be concluded that there are 60 data or utterances that contain presupposition found in the BBC English Conversations. Existential presupposition appears 13 times, factive presupposition appears 5 times, non- factive presupposition appears 2 times, structural presupposition appears 17 times, lexical presupposition appears 6 times and counterfactual appears 17 times. Secondly, there are three kinds contributions of the presupposition in the BBC English Conversation. There are 18 data included into to extend a supposition of prediction , 23 data included into presupposition as a toll and 19 data included into to give the other meaning.
