HAIR AS HUMAN REFLECTION OF THE BIBLE, HEBREW PROVERBS, POE’S POEMS AND SKINNER’S POEM IN GORHAM’S SALON

Sarah Gorham’s Salon is one of the contemporary American poems. Salon is an attractive poem. In that poem, almost all of the diction of word appears beautifully and have meaningful word. That poem is focused many italic lines in that poem. It causes many implied meanings about hair in Sarah Gorham’s Salon. More specifically, Sarah Gorham’s Salon is influenced by the Bible as Christian’s holy book. That poem is also influenced by Hebrew Proverbs which contains many moral values inside the Salon poem. Further, Sarah Gorham’s Salon is influenced by Edgar Allan Poe and Jeffrey Skinner towards the theme and style of writing Salon.
The stable meaning of hair in Salon is hair which grows from the head of the girl. This study uses deconstruction and intertextuality theories to analyze Sarah Gorham’s Salon. Based on Derrida’s point of view, this study deconstructs the stable meaning of hair with many italic lines in Salon poem. It is the theory to find the other meanings of hair through that poem. Then, this study finds the intertextual relationship between the word hair in Salon with the Bible, Hebrew Proverbs, Poe’s poems and Skinner’s poem according to Kristeva’s intertextuality theory. That theory is used to examine the deconstructed hair which reflects intertextual relationship with other sources.
The data analyzed in this study are poems, the Bible, and Hebrew Proverbs, so that, the qualitative method is used in this study accordingly. The data collected from an interview and the library research. The method of analyzing data use alternatively method. The model of analyzing data is related to Humberman and Mile’s method and also Shih’s triangulation. Having analyzed the data, it is found that the word hair is deconstructed as human reflection. Then, the intertextual relationship of the word hair also reflects the human reflection according to the Bible, Hebrew Proverbs, Poe’s Alone and The Conqueror Worm, and Skinner’s Elegy with Yellow Boat.
