The Friendship Portrayed by Dexter and Emma in David Nicholls's One Day

The friendship between Dexter and Emma in David Nicholls’s One Day,
are interesting to be discussed. This study is aimed to give further understanding
about the types of friendship, factors that influence the friendship, and the
response for other characters toward their friendship. In this case, this study is
focus on the analysis of Dexter and Emma’s utterances and as the two main
characters and some other characters narration in the novel. This study is used
psychology and literature especially friendship theory to analyzed the friendship
in the novel.
Because this study is qualitative, the key instrument is the writer herself
and the data is described in the form of words. Hence, the data collection has been
done synchronously with the data analysis.
The results that were found in this study are; firstly, the types of friendship
between Dexter and Emma, the psychological factors that influence their
friendship, and the other characters response toward their friendship. Dexter and
Emma’s friendship is categorized as the type of goodness in friendship which
contains some attributes such as; caring, giving with no turn, and long lasting.
