Abstract

This study is focused to discuss the types and the functions of affixes. The objectives of this study are to explain the types of affix which are found in A Boy and a Bear in a Boat novel and to explain the functions of affix which are found in this novel.
This study uses descriptive qualitative design. The source of the data of this study is the novel a Boy and a Bear in a Boat by Shelton, while the data are the words in the novel which contain affixes. The method used to collect the data was non participant observation method. Whereas, the method used to analyze the data was the extralingual correlation method.
The findings of this study shows that Shelton uses the three types of affix in his novel, there are 3.740 data used. The three types are prefixes 35 data, suffixes 3.633 data, and circumfixes 72 data. The data of prefixes are divided into four sub-types, they are locative prefixes 9 data, temporal prefixes 5 data, negative prefixes 21 data, while quantitative prefixes are not found. The data of suffixes are divided into four sub-types, they are nominal suffixes 654 data, verbal suffixes 2.066 data, adjectival suffixes 466 data, and adverbial suffixes 447 data. One of the types which appear most in the novel is suffix. The functions of affix applied in his novel are to derive 790 data and to inflect 2.950 data. The most data found have function as to inflect because there are so many data of words are to match with the grammar use without changing its meaning in this novel.
