A STUDY OF SPEECH ACT USED BY DREW FAUST IN HARVARD UNIVERSITY

This study analyzed types of speech act and types of speech act frequently which were used by Drew Faust in commencement speech at Harvard University. This study aimed to find types of speech act and type of speech act frequently used in the two selected commencement speech by Drew Faust.
This study used descriptive qualitative design. The sources of data were two videos of commencement speech of Drew Faust, while the data were the utterances of Drew Faust containing speech act. The method used in collecting data was content analysis method, while the method of analyzing data used content analysis method.The data were analyzed and classified based on theory which was proposed by Searle and Austin (1962).
After classifying and analyzing data found, the writer concluded that Drew Faust used the three types of speech act in her two selected-commencement speech. The three types of speech act are used that are locutionary which was used 7 times, illocutionary which was used 30times,and perlocutionary which was used 2 times. So, illocutionary was the only type of speech acts which is frequently used by her in the two selected-commencement speeches. Furthermore, locutionary act was used by Drew Faust to remind people about something happened and done in previous time to make better live in future.Perlocutionary act was used by Drew Faust to inspire people to do like what she was saying. and illocutinary act was used by Drew Faust to create a smooth communication between speaker and audience.
