ABSTRACT
Sa’adah, L. (2016). Magical Realism In Anthony Doerr’s All The Light We Cannot See. Thesis. English Study Program of Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Rif’ah Inayati, S.S., M.A
This study focuses on five elements of magical realism and historical anchoring that are portrayed in Anthony Doerr’s All The Light We Cannot See. This study aims to explore the five elements of magical realism that are portrayed in the
novel All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr in order to find out whether the novel can be regarded as magical realism or not. It also aims to explore the historical anchoring in the novel. The writer chooses the novel to be analyzed because it is bestseller novel in 2014 that contains the two interesting things (World War II
and the magic stone). This study was conducted by applying a qualitative research design since the data are in the form of words. The data of this study are the characters’ utterances and author narrations that contain five elements of magical realism and historical facts in All The Light We Cannot See. The data were collected by using reading
comprehension and highlighting. In analyzing the data, the writer used interactive data analysis by Miles and Huberman. This study used magical realism theory, especially five elements of magical realism of Wendy B. Faris’ concept. The results of this study show that the novel, All The Light We Cannot See,contained five elements of magical realism. Those are Irreducible Element, Phenomenal world, Unsettling Doubt, Merging Realms, and Disruption of Identity. Therefore, the novel can be regarded as magical realism. The other result is historical anchoring anchors the magical thing to make it still in magical realism frame through the historical facts in the novel. Thus, the story reflects the real life.
