An Analysis of Liberal Feminism Portrayed By Mae and Annie in The Circle By Dave Eggers

Literature is any writen work that refer to an individual work itself or
categorical understanding of literature. It describes or give much information of
human life such as: culture, sosilogy, history, and physcology. So the writer is
interested in analyzing the novel to be his research. This research studies about The
Circle by Dave Eggers. This writer use qualitative method to find the issue in the
novel and he found the feminist issue to be discussed.
This study uses feminism theory that focuses on the liberal feminism. The
characters that will be analyzed are Mae and Annie as the representative of liberal
women portrayed in the novel. Therefore, this study aims to explain the way how
liberal feminism depicted by Mae Holland and Annie.
In addition, this study is conducted using a qualitative research approach. The
research instrument in this study is the researcher himself. After analyzing the novel,
“The Circle”, the conclusion of this study found in this novel. The first is: Mae
depicts the liberal feminism as women who active in public place, women at work,
reproductive rights, sisterhood or empower to other women, and education. The
second character is Annie who also active at public sphere, sisterhood or empower to
other women, and woman at work.
