Abstract

ABSTRACT

Sofiyulloh 15.05.111.00061 A Study of Conjunctions in New York Magazine’s Articles. English Study Program of Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Iqbal Nurul Azhar, S.S., M.Hum.

This study focuses on conjunctions used in New York Magazine’s Articles. This study analyzes types of conjunctions and how it connects one clause with another clause in New York Magazine’s articles. In this study, the writer uses theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976) and theory of Halliday and Matthiessen (2004).
This study is conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design because the data are in the form of clauses. The source of data is New York Magazine, while the data are clauses which contain conjunctions taken from two selected articles entitled “Giand Leap Lannding on The Moon Looks Harder than Ever in First Man” and “Up in Flames a Marriage Explodes, Briliantly, in Paul Dano’s Wildlife”. The data are collected by using content analysis method proposed by Khotari (2004). In addition, the data are analyzed by using interactive data analysis method proposed by Miles and Hubberman (1994).
The findings show that there are four types of conjunction used by the author. The first is additive conjunction (8 data); the second is adversative conjunction (6 data); the third is causal conjunction (3 data); the forth is temporal conjunction (4 data). In addition, the writer found only 1 datum contains conjunction elaborates one clause with another, 13 data contain conjunctions extend one clause with another, and 7 data contain conjunctions enhance one clause with another.
