CAPITOL’S DOMINATION IN SUZANNE COLLINS’ THE HUNGER GAMES

Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games is a novel which shows the domination of Capitol over people in districts in its story. This novel describes the ways of Capitol’s President dominates people in districts. Capitol’s President dominates the people through his power as President. Therefore, two statements of research problem are set in this study. They are: how are the dominations of Capitol described in the novel and how are the effects of the domination of Capitol to the main characters and everyone in all districts elaborated in the novel. Then, hegemony theory is used to analyze the novel. In this theory, it is explained how the ways of someone or group dominates others. There are two forms of domination in hegemony theory, they are leadership and intellectuality, form of leadership and intellectuality are based on hegemony theory by Antonio Gramsci.
In addition, this study uses qualitative research design to observe the data in the form of words. Finally, after analyzing the novel, it can be concluded: Capitol’s President dominates other districts by creating The Hunger Games that arranged every year to make the people in districts under his control. Therefore, some effects arise that is felt by the main characters and everyone in all districts because the domination of Capitol’s president. They are the rebellion of the main characters and people in districts.
