Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the types of translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) and translation equivalence by Bell (1991) in the translation of Indonesian cultural terms into English in the book “Mutiara Yang Tersisa I. This study uses qualitative research method. The data source of this study is the book “Mutiara Yang Tersisa I”. The data in this study are Indonesian cultural terms and their English translations. In collecting data, the writer used the content analysis method to find Indonesian cultural terms and their translations. In addition, the writer also used a questionnaire to assess the level of translation equivalence. In this study the writer analyses the data using the Miles and Huberman method. The result this study shows that there are 9 types of translation techniques appearing in the translation of Indonesian cultural term. They are adaptation (3 data), amplification (3 data), borrowing (8 data), calque (2 data), established equivalence (12 data), generalisation (4 data), literal translation (3 data), reduction (2 data), and transposition (2 data). This shows that established equivalent technique is the most widely used technique by translators. For the result of translation equivalence assessment, there are 34 data with dominantly fully equivalent, partial equivalence (1 data dominantly increased meaning), partial equivalence (1 data dominantly decreased meaning), and non-equivalent (3 data dominantly different meaning). This shows that 34 out of 39 data have been translated well by the translator, so that readers can understand the meaning of the cultural terms well.
